BetterBookmark ("we") is a bookmark manager made up of the web app at app.betterbookmark.si, the BetterBookmark Chrome extension, and the server behind them. This policy explains what we collect, why, who processes it, and how to delete it.
What we collect
- Account. You sign in with Google, with an email and password, or as a guest, through Google Firebase Authentication. Firebase holds your email address (and, for Google sign-in, your name and profile photo); passwords are handled by Firebase and never reach our servers. Our database stores only your Firebase user ID.
- Bookmarks. For each link you save or import: its URL, title, description, icon, folders, the date it was added, and your pins, tags, categories, click counts and last-visited time. Tags, notes and last-visit dates also come from your export file when your browser includes them (Firefox does).
- Page details. When you add a single link, our server fetches that page once and reads only its title and description. We don't store page content. Imported bookmarks are not fetched.
- Searches. Your search text is used to find matching bookmarks and is not saved in our database. Your recent searches are kept only in your browser.
- Error reports. If you report a problem, we store the error message, the page address where it happened, your browser's user agent and, if you're signed in, your user ID.
- Technical data. Your IP address is used briefly to limit abusive traffic and can appear in server logs. Vercel Analytics records anonymous page views and performance metrics.
The Chrome extension
The extension only acts when you ask it to:
- Bookmarks permission: when you click "Import", it reads your Chrome bookmarks (URL, title, date added, folder names) and sends them to your BetterBookmark account. It never changes your Chrome bookmarks.
- activeTab permission: when you click "Save this page", it reads the current tab's address and saves it. It doesn't read page content, other tabs, or your browsing history.
- Storage permission: it keeps the progress of a running import on your device.
- Sign-in: you connect the extension from the website, which hands it a one-time sign-in token. Firebase keeps the extension's session on your device.
The extension runs no remote code. Its use of data complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
How we use it
Only to run BetterBookmark: storing your library, searching it, keeping the service secure, and fixing errors. Search works by turning each bookmark's title, description, folders, tags and address into a numeric "embedding". This runs on our own server; your bookmarks are not sent to any outside AI service.
We don't sell your data, show ads, track you across other websites, or use your data for anything unrelated to BetterBookmark, including credit or lending decisions.
Who processes it
- Google Firebase: sign-in and accounts.
- Railway: hosts our server and database, where your bookmarks are stored.
- Vercel: hosts the web app and provides anonymous analytics.
- Sentry: error and performance monitoring for our server, the web app and the extension. Records include your user ID and your device and connection details (operating system, device model, screen size, CPU cores, memory, and connection type and speed) so we can find what fails or runs slow on which setups.
- Google favicon service: to show site icons, the web app requests each bookmark's icon from Google using the site's address.
Cookies and local storage
The web app sets authToken (keeps you signed in, 7 days), onboardingComplete (remembers you finished setup, 1 year) and sidebar:state (remembers the sidebar, 7 days). Recent searches and the Firebase session are stored in your browser. We use no advertising cookies.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your data while your account exists. You can delete single bookmarks at any time. Settings → Danger zone → "Delete account" permanently deletes your bookmarks, categories, pins, visit history, error reports linked to your account, and your sign-in account. Server logs and error records expire under our providers' retention periods.
Security
All traffic uses HTTPS, every request is checked against your signed-in account, and each account can reach only its own bookmarks.
Children
BetterBookmark is not directed to children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update it here and change the date at the top.
